Sermon: “Jesus: Him Suffering, Death, and Burial”

Series: What We Believe - Preaching through the Apostle's Creed

1. Think about the inclusion of Pontius Pilate in the Apostle’s Creed – does it seem odd to you? Can you list at least two reasons why he may be part of it? Do you see any advantages to his inclusion?    

2. Why is it significant that Jesus died? Just how important was his physical death?

3. We often focus on the physical suffering by Jesus at the cross. But was this really the worst part? Biblically, explain what caused the greatest suffering for Jesus? Why? 

4. “Christ died for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15:3). Explain the practical significance of this statement. How should this truth practically affect how you approach your life?

5. Split up into groups (four if you can). Have each group look over one of the burial accounts in one of the gospels: Matthew 27:57-66, Mark 15:42-47, Luke 23:50-56, or John 19:38-42. Ask each group to take notes, writing down important, interesting, or helpful aspects of the account. Join back together after about 6-8 minutes and then allow each group 5 minutes to share their observations or questions with the others. NOTE: ALLOW 25-30 MINUTES FOR THIS EXERCISE!

I appreciated these top 10 evangelism tips from Tim Keller. Here are the ten:

Let people around you know you are a Christian (in a natural, unforced way)

Ask friends about their faith – and just listen!

Listen to your friends problems – maybe offer to pray for them

Share your problems with others – testify to how your faith helps you

Give them a book to read

Share your story

Answer objections and questions

Invite them to a church event

Offer to read the Bible with them

Take them to an explore course

You can read the full post on these here. What it ultimately comes down to is taking the time to have real relationships with people and in those relationships being fully open about your faith (and having a faith that actually makes a difference in all areas of your life!) And the Lord, by his grace, will work through you to reach those you know.

Sermon: “Jesus: Fully God and Fully Man”

• Read (and take notes as you do!) Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:26-38. Please list your thoughts and reflections on these passages. Share them with the group as well as any questions you may have.

• Isaiah 7:14 contain a prophecy of the virgin conception (see Matthew 1:23). How does the phrase “God with us” (Immanuel) help us as we think about the Incarnation?

• Read Romans 5:17, Romans 8:3, 1 Timothy 2:5 and Hebrews 2:17 in their context, then please answer the following:

o   In what way is the sinlessness of Jesus connected to his being born of a virgin?

o   Why was it important that Jesus be sinless?

o   Why was it important that Jesus be a true man?

• Look again at Luke 1:37. What does this passage say about miracles? Talk about how one’s view of the supernatural affects their view of miracles. How does this speak to the modern view of the miraculous?
